Hessel – A living manor house
Hessel is one of the last thatched manors with four wings in Denmark. The first time we hear about the manor is in the year 1391, but the history goes further back. The barn dates from around 1650. In 1702 large parts of Hessel were destroyed by fire, but it was rebuilt again.
Hessel has always been a steer’s farm, but there is also stables for sheep, horses and poultry. The pond has only been for the animals – drinking water came from a spring.
In the farmhouse you find the original furniture from late 1900th century placed just as they were at the time of the last owner – The Elle family.
The manor Hessel became a museum in 1966.
Today you can experience an authentic farm environment on Hessel from late 1900th century. Throughout the season, many volunteers revive old craftsmanship and traditions.
The manor Hessel welcomes you to the country life, as it once was.
